I’m taking lunch to my brother. He’s working the Templar fields today. Bread and cheese, bit of ale. I do this walk most days someone’s out here – I’m told to be careful around the river here; trip and you could end up at Pomfret.
The big barn over there — biggest building I ever saw. Bigger than the church at Whitkirk even. I asked my dad how they got the roof on and he said ‘a lot of men and a lot of wood’.
I know Wulfric. He comes to the village sometimes, talks to my dad about the days we owe. He walks different when he’s near Brother Hugues — straighter, like. Brother Jean came once when our priest Willem was poorly. He talks funny, like Brother Hugues does. Don’t know why.
The wool goes away. Dad says it gets put on big carts that go to the river, then onto boats, then… somewhere. He said the water goes flat and you can’t see trees on the other side. Don’t know what that means.
Edwin’s kitchen cat, she’s getting fat. Probably kittens coming. We’ve got a dog at home, I call him Bramble. He’s old but he’s good.
There’s a boy in the village, Wat, he won’t talk to Dickon anymore because Dickon said something about his sister. Don’t know what. They used to be friends. That’s my brother over there. I’d better get this to him quick.
